Welcome to Villa Viva! In our circus of the future, you can not only do good while you sleep, but also marvel at all kinds of art. Artists from all over the world have given free rein to their creativity in our Artrooms.
Your Artroom was designed by the artist Joséphine Sagna. Joséphine Sagna grew up with different cultures: Her father comes from Senegal, her mother from Transylvania in Romania. This makes her part of a generation of multicultural people who have to contend with many challenges and prejudices as they grow up in German - and predominantly white - society. In her youth, Joséphine is repeatedly confronted with the feeling of not fitting in, not belonging, not being enough. Being torn between different cultures, skin colours, social values and norms becomes an integral part of her identity - and a central aspect of her artistic work.
In large-format pictures, she interweaves her own perception and experiences of other BIPoC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour) from her environment, focusing on the experiences of multicultural, Black women. She questions common stereotypes, brings prejudices to light, addresses structural racism and aims to create awareness and sensitivity for these issues. At the same time, Sagna wants to send a message of empowerment. Celebrating the often overlooked complexity of the Black woman: her strength, her courage, but also her vulnerable side, her anger - and her swag.
